LinuxCNC Support

There are several additional sources of information and support for both UBUNTU and LinuxCNC.

On WWW.UBUNTU.COM there is documentation and support accessible from the main page. It’s currently listed in tiny print down at the bottom of the page. despite the small writing, the free support is very good. The documentation for UBUNTU is there too.

For LinuxCNC, go to www.linuxcnc.org and read the Getting Started Manual (point 6 in the installation steps).

The menu item (near the top of the page) leads to Documentation in various formats.

The community Wiki is useful, and accessible from the main page menu.

The Forum is also useful, and is accessible from the main page menu.

In addition, there is a mail list. That’s a very different animal from the Forum or the Wiki.

A mail list works like this:

list members can send an email with a comment or a question, and it is sent (by the system) to all members subscribed to the list. Some will have opted to receive copies of every individual email sent to the list. Others may have opted for a single email summarising the individual emails sent that day.

Anyone on the list can read and reply to the email. Replies go to everyone subscribed to the list.

Email lists are an archaic form of communication, pre-dating the Discussion Group, or the more popular Forum. But they have their place.

However; you should be aware that the linuxCNC mail list is not the place to ask the kind of simple questions many beginners have. Those questions belong to the Forum, or can be answered by reading the Wiki or the documentation.

The members of the list are knowledgeable and helpful, and several are involved with the development of LinuxCNC, so you will get the best from this list if you ask a clear, specific and technical question. It would be a good idea to sit on the side of the list for a little while and read the mail, to get a clear idea of the kind of topics being discussed, and the kind of topics which interest the list members.

Access to sign up for the list is via the Community tab on the main menu.
(Note that where there are references to EMC, this refers to the old name for what is now LinuxCNC. Those references will no doubt be edited and updated sometime.)

Other sources of support

There is some LinuxCNC discussion on www.cnczone.com

in machine Controllers, Software and Solutions.
